GOG will be removing Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 from its store on December 13, following a request from Blizzard. This move comes just weeks after the titles were added to GOG's Preservation Program and shortly after Blizzard released remastered editions of both games.

Despite the delisting, GOG assures customers that those who already own the games will continue to receive full tech support and a seamless gaming experience. Additionally, GOG is offering a discount to those who have not yet purchased the games. By using the code "MakeWarcraftLiveForever," customers can receive $2 off the bundle, which normally costs $14.99.

The timing of the delisting follows Blizzard's release of remastered versions of the Warcraft titles on Battle.net, priced at $9.99 and $14.99, with the original versions still available for $5.99 and $9.99, respectively. GOG had included Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 in its newly launched Preservation Program, which aims to preserve over 100 classic titles like Fallout: New Vegas and The Witcher 2: Assassin's of Kings. Even though these games will be removed from sale, GOG has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the games in the program, ensuring that owners can continue to enjoy them with full compatibility and support, regardless of future updates to operating systems.

The issue of video game preservation has become a growing concern among fans, as both new and older titles face the risk of losing accessibility over time. A prominent example is The Crew, which Ubisoft removed from sale and shut down in March. Originally released in 2014, The Crew is now completely inaccessible, as it was an online-only title that no longer exists in any playable form, now or in the future.

While online-only games like The Crew are particularly vulnerable to delisting, even single-player games are increasingly at risk. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, for example, was launched with a physical version that only contained part of the game, requiring a download for the full experience. As a result, the game's physical copy becomes essentially unusable without an internet connection.

In response to these challenges, GOG has set a goal to include hundreds of games in its Preservation Program by the end of 2025. Currently, a large number of games are under evaluation to meet the platform's stringent quality standards. Games that don’t initially pass the tests will undergo improvements until they meet GOG's criteria, ensuring they remain accessible for years to come.
